Call to worship

Leader:        Awake!  The invitation to carry light comes from the voice who cries out for a smooth way through wild places.

All:                  O God, your call is uncomfortable.  How can we who are weak remove the rough and rugged places?

(pause for silence)

Leader:        Quiet our questioning souls.

All:                  Lead us into your presence so all can see your way.

Leader:        Let it be so.

 Confession

O God of blazing heavens, you come to us gently and tenderly, speaking peace and comfort into our fear.  We long for you, we yearn for your promise of a new heaven and earth.  Yet we confess that though we know how to get busy and prepare for this season, we do not know how to slow down or wait and make space for your presence.

May our ordinary lives intersect with the power of your Word and the transforming presence of your grace.
Empower us to “let it be so.”

            (pause for silence)

Words of assurance

O God, Emmanuel, in Jesus, the Christ, you have come among us.  You have given us life, and we are restored.

TRC Call to Prayer

Father God,
All cultures have views of the world that are at times inaccurate, and even harmful.  We recognize that the colonialism of the past had differing views of land ownership and a cultural superiority which not only damaged relations with the First Nations of North America, but also negatively affected their various and rich cultures.  We humbly ask that the negative remnants of that cultural thinking that still linger today will be removed.  We recognize that we must not allow ourselves to be conformed to the patterns of this world, but rather be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2).  We pray that decision makers will be able to test and approve what Your will is.  We pray that there will be mutual respect and humility as government leaders and Aboriginal leaders meet to build reconciling relations.   Amen             Context:   TRC Call to Action #45

Welcome the Stranger- GTA

In addition to supporting three refugee families, Welcome the Stranger-GTA is now working on assisting families to bring their relatives and friends who are registered refugees with the United Nations, to Canada.  This is being done through an application process called Group of Five (G5).  Most of these G5 refugees will have their financial and resettlement needs covered by their relatives and friends in Canada.  However, there is one Christian Vietnamese family of 11 who are living in a camp in Thailand and are being threatened with expulsion. They have a connection to the Vietnamese boat people sponsored by Wideman MC and our area churches in the 1970.  We understand that they are being doubly persecuted for their faith and for their minority status.

With Wideman MC leading, $41,000 of the needed $53,000 has been raised to sponsor this family. The Hmong Mennonite Church in Kitchener will take care of all of their resettlement needs but do not have the funds as they are sponsoring two additional families. The Hmong group in California have raised $12,500 to help sponsor this family.

$12,000 more is needed to complete this sponsorship funding. The local churches have been very generous.  If you wish to donate please give a cheque to your church treasurer who will forward it to Welcome the Stranger-GTA Group of Five.  You will receive a receipt for tax purposes from the congregation.

Thank you.

Call to Worship

Leader:          Awake!
The invitation to carry light comes from the God of of                        trembling mountains and shaking foundations.

All:                  O God, your expectations terrify us.  How can our small selves hold your blazing presence?

(pause for silence)

Leader:           Quiet our questioning souls.

All:                  Lead us beyond our resistance.  Let it be.

Confession

O God of power and might, we want you to tear open the heavens and come down, yet we tremble and quake at the thought.

We confess that even though we know your light, we do not like the dark, empty void where your Spirit hovers over the waters.

We shake like leaves in the wind, fearful of what you might ask, afraid to trust you completely.

Caught up in the swirling of our world we struggle to “let it be.”
Forgive us, O God.
(pause for silence)

Words of assurance

O God, Emmanuel, in Jesus, the Christ, you have come among us.  You have given us life, and we are restored.

TRC Call to Prayer

Father God,

There are many parents in Aboriginal communities who did not have good models of parenting because they were raised in an institution, the residential school, rather than in a home with a family.  The legacy of parenting that is naturally passed down from mother to daughter and father to son was often disrupted.  We ask that Aboriginal families who need support will receive it in order to become effective parents.

For those in the Aboriginal community who are parenting well, encourage them to mentor other parents and young adults.  May Aboriginal parents who are Christ followers look to You for wisdom as they raise their children.  May those in their community see that godly parenting does exist within Aboriginal culture.  For those of us who have judged, please forgive us and fill us with compassion as we interact with hurting families.   Amen
