Call to worship

Leader:     Come, sons and daughters of Abraham and Sarah, nations born of barren lands, you who stand here because of promises fulfilled, come and worship your God.

People:      We were born through the faith of our ancestors, just as our faith will give life to future generations; even as we hope against hope,   we come to worship our God.

Leader:    Welcome home, children of God.  Welcome to this house of God.

Confession

God of our ancestors and our descendants, promising Abraham and Sarah children at their age just seems mean.  For them to believe that promise sounds foolish—almost as foolish as expecting that same faithfulness from us.   That was then, this is now.

We are not used to waiting.  If something we want takes too long, we itch to move on to the next thing, even when waiting is important.

Forgive us.  Forgive our impatience and refusal to believe in what we cannot see.   Build in us the willingness to hope against hope.  Help us to value and contribute to a future yet unseen.  Instill in us a faith to inspire future generations.

Words of assurance

I will always keep the promise I have made to you and your descendants, because I am your God and their God.

Call to worship

Leader:           The time has come; the kingdom of God draws near.  Repent and believe the good news.

People:          We have come.  We are here.  We worship God together.

Confession

God of creation and salvation, too often we fear there is not enough, and we want to keep what there is for ourselves, including your love, so we build barriers.  We want to decide who’s in or out.  We fail to see the impact of our selfishness.

Help us to value all of your creation—the earth, air, water, and all living creatures, both the tame and the wild – the way you help us to preserve and not destroy them. Forgive us for making your love too small. Teach us to act with humility, grace, and mercy as we seek to make things right.

Words of assurance

All the Lord’s paths are loving and faithful for those who keep God’s covenant and laws.

WIDER CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS

Private Member’s Bill C-262,

a bill to harmonize Canadian law with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People passed a second reading vote Wednesday, February 7 in the House of Commons by a margin of 216 to 76. This bill, written by Indigenous MP Romeo Saganash and promoted by Mennonite Church Canada and Christian Peacemaker Teams will now move on to committee where there is still danger of it being watered down.

Murray L. along with two other CPTers were able to attend speeches in the House of Commons on Monday, prior to the vote. Many Danforth Mennonite Church members assisted in this effort by signing supportive postcards which were sent to their MP’s. Thanks for all thoughts and prayers for Reconciliation between our peoples as this bill moves forward.

Family Day Activities at Willowgrove
February 19, 2018  10:00 am to 3:00 pm

In addition to outdoor snow activities, we will be having special activities to highlight our 50 years on the Willowgrove farm.  There will be a pioneer room with activities and the history of Willowgrove.  We are also partnering with Care and Share to do quilt tying and highlight our connection with MCC.  Food available for purchase.  Cost for the event is $20 /car.

THIS WEEK’S PRAYER FOCUS: The 2018 Winter Olympics begin this week in PyeongChang, South Korea. In addition to the competition between athletes, the games are often viewed as an opportunity for promoting peace between nations and for celebrating the beauty of the various cultures of different people groups from around the world. As you watch the events in the days ahead, pray that the Lord of peace would use His people throughout the world to faithfully proclaim the truth of Christ as the one and only, perfect, and permanent peace there is. Pray particularly for our Christian brothers and sisters in South Korea who have the opportunity to share the love of Christ with people from across the world. Ask God to provide a right safety and security during the events – keeping athletes, spectators, and workers from harm.

Christian Peacemaker Teams Delegation opportunities:
A different way to spend a vacation!

Delegations are a primary way to become involved in the work of Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT).

CPT sends short-term (7-14 day - holiday length) peacemaker delegations into crisis settings around the world. These delegations link communities experiencing violence with concerned individuals, churches and groups. Delegations offer participants a first-hand experience of CPT's on-the-ground experiment in faith-based non-violence.

Delegations are open to all interested people and do not require specific nonviolence training -- just fill out a Delegations Application at: https://cpt.org/participate/delegation
Delegations currently go to:
