  DANFORTH ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Christian Education Committee is looking for volunteers to provide child care during the Sunday morning service.  There is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board and we would really appreciate it if you could sign up and put your name in the rotation so that we could make up a schedule for the school year.  The commitment would be from now until the end of May.  If you have any questions, please feel free to talk to Jennifer Hayward at 416-698-8828 or ghay2263@yahoo.ca.

Saturday, September 25, 7pm. “Stories from Palestine” at Danforth Mennonite Church Barbara Martens of Ruthven has recently returned from a service term with Christian Peacemaker Teams in Hebron, in the Occupied Territories of the West Bank of the Jordan River.  We invite you to come and be informed, but also to “feel with” the people of Palestine.  The stories of 5 people will be windows through which you can glimpse their lives of suffering and hope and courage under Israeli occupation.

Sunday, October 3 – Potluck after Church and MVS Evaluation. After the meal, there will be a meeting for the congregation to review Danforth’s MVS Program and help provide direction for its future.

The Nursing Home at SCOC will have its own table at this years Peppermint Fair. For those of you who have any canning or crafts that they might like to donate to this table, please contact Sharon Wilkinson.

Recently a number of historical items have gone missing from the church, including three or four photo albums.  The identity of other items is unknown, but the place where they used to be is now empty.  While being pleased that people are showing interest in our history, I am concerned that these items be located so that the centennial book committee will have access to them for reference purposes. All to support MCC’s work of Relief, Community development, and Peacebuilding in Ontario, in Canada, and in 60+ countries around the world. 10:00 – 4:00, with the quilt auction at 12 noon. 1000 Murray Ross Parkway (near Steeles and Jane).  We have been invited to meet with MCEC leadership and with other GTA Cluster leaders on Tuesday Sept. 21 at 7pm at Hagerman Mennonite Church. The agenda should cover: (1) MCEC’s purpose and vision; (2) priorities for allocation of resources; and (3) how to ensure financial support for MCEC ministries. We need to send our list of delegates by Sept. 7. Please confirm with Mike DeHaan by Sunday Sept. 5th.

   On Saturday, August 28th, four cyclists pedaled 99km to celebrate 99 years of Danforth Mennonite Church.  They visited points of Mennonite interest in the GTA, from 461 King St, to 46 Scotia, to the Altoona Meeting House near Stouffville!

 “Let’s make a generous statement that we love our neighbours in Pakistan!”  Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is inviting your donations for our neighbours in Pakistan devastated by catastrophic flooding. Funds will be forwarded to trusted and experienced agencies who are already working there as MCC does not have its own staff in Pakistan.  Donate online at mcc.org or call 1-800-313-6226. Mark cheques as  Pakistan Flood Relief and send to 50 Kent Ave. Kitchener ON N2G 3R1 or  your nearest MCC Thrift Shop. MCC is eligible for Canadian Government matching funds.

MCC Material Resources invites donations
There is a current need for MCC school kits, newborn kits and sewing kits.  Items in short supply in the Material Resources workroom are  flannelette in juvenile prints or solids (or money to purchase  it) and good quality scissors for the sewing kits.  Please drop off your donation to the MR Workroom at  50 Kent Ave.  We would love to show you around the workroom and warehouse, so you can see what we’re busy doing!

This will be a joint worship service with New Life Mennonite Church.  It will be a potluck, so bring food to contribute.  Also bring dishes, lawn chairs, and sports equipment for the afternoon.  The swimming pool will be open.  An offering will be taken in support of Willowgrove.  Also, if you have a couple of extra spaces in your car, could you stop at the McCowan TTC station to give rides to New Life church people? Betty Puricelli will be there, organizing the rides. Pease give her a call at 416-467-6336. There will be NO service at Danforth.

PRAYER CONCERNS

Mennonite Central Committee grieves the loss of service worker Glen D. Lapp following an attack on his medical team in northeastern Afghanistan. We call the church to prayer for Glen’s loved ones, family and friends of the others who perished, staff of our partner organization in Afghanistan, the people of Afghanistan, and the people who carried out this tragic act. Glen truly showed Christ’s love and compassion and the biblical call to peacemaking in serving with the Afghan people. He will be remembered.

Beginning a New Century Together – join us at our retreat at Fraser Lake on Sept. 10 – 12.  Marilyn Zehr will be our resource person for Friday & Saturday. Please submit your registration forms & registration fees ASAP either in person to Jon Beer or Kim Bowman, or in their mailboxes.

 Danforth 99th Anniversary Bike Tour: Saturday, August 28. This will be a ‘practice run’ for our 100k for 100 years bike ride next year.  We will visit Mennonite sites in the GTA on this all-day bike ride.  Go the distance, (approximately 100k) or ride part way. Details with exact meeting place and time to follow.  Contact Richard Manz or Anne Reesor for information.
