This Sunday we launch our book study, entitled, Radical Gratitude by Mary Jo Leddy.  Discussion Leader: Murray L.

Please read chapters one and two. Murray will open the discussion with these two questions:

  1. What is something you have taken for granted?
  2. What is something you are grateful for?

Call to Worship

Leader: When we see injustice:

People: May God help us speak for justice.

Leader: When we receive harm:

People: May God help us to forgive.

Leader: When we see people in need:

People: May God help us to offer help.

Leader: When we are in need:

People: May we trust God to send us help.

Leader: We pray that God will not send us trials.

People: We also thank God for sustaining us through our trials.

All: We pray that God will help us to show mercy,
even as God gives us mercy.

Scripture Reading

Psalm 37:1-11 (NRSVUE)

Exhortation to Patience and Trust
Of David.

Do not fret because of the wicked;
do not be envious of wrongdoers,
for they will soon fade like the grass
and wither like the green herb.

Trust in the Lord and do good;
live in the land and enjoy security.
Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him, and he will act.
He will make your vindication shine like the light
and the justice of your cause like the noonday.

Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him;
do not fret over those who prosper in their way,
over those who carry out evil devices.

Refrain from anger and forsake wrath.
Do not fret—it leads only to evil.
For the wicked shall be cut off,
but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.

10 Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more;
though you look diligently for their place, they will not be there.
11 But the meek shall inherit the land
and delight themselves in abundant prosperity.

Psalm 37:39-40
39 The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
he is their refuge in the time of trouble.
40 The Lord helps them and rescues them;
he rescues them from the wicked and saves them because they take refuge in him.

Luke 6:27-38 (NRSVUE)

Love for Enemies
27 “But I say to you who are listening: Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you; 28 bless those who curse you; pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you, and if anyone takes away what is yours, do not ask for it back again. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.

32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 If you lend to those from whom you expect to receive payment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 Instead, love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Judging Others
37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap, for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.”

WIDER CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS

COMMUNITY CORNER

We’re currently looking for assistance with a few finance-related tasks and would love to have a volunteer on board. Specifically, we’re seeking volunteers for:

  • Bookkeeping: Around 5 hours per week, ideally in person (in the TOTB office at DMC).
  • Payroll: Processing payroll once a month (this could be done remotely or in person).
  • Company Treasurer (Board of Directors): This involves attending quarterly meetings, additional email communication, and occasional Zoom meetings with staff.

If someone had all these skills and time to do all these tasks we’d be open to one person. Or to divide up some of the tasks to make it a lighter load we’re open to a few volunteers.

There is a mildly-immediate need for help, as I’ll be going on paternity leave starting whenever our 2nd kiddo comes (April 5th due date), so while we’re interested in long term support, we would also consider short term support as well.

If you know of someone, please send them my way! Or if you’re comfortable sharing this in the announcements that would be nice too.

Let me know! 🙂
Thanks,

Acknowledging the Storm and
Seeking God’s Presence

Leader: As the wind howls and the snow falls, let us remember that even in the midst of storms, God’s presence is with us.

People: Lord, we are here, seeking your comfort and strength.

Leader: Let us turn our hearts to you, for you are our refuge and our hope.

People: God, we are here, seeking your comfort and strength.

Leader: Let us worship him, for he is the one who calms the storm and brings us peace.

People: God, we are here, seeking your comfort and strength.

Scripture Reading

Luke 6:17-26 (NRSVUE)

Jesus Teaches and Heals
17 He came down with them and stood on a level place with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. 18 They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases, and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And everyone in the crowd was trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them.

Blessings and Woes

20 Then he looked up at his disciples and said:
“Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
21 “Blessed are you who are hungry now,
for you will be filled.
“Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.

22 “Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven, for that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.

24 “But woe to you who are rich,
for you have received your consolation.
25 “Woe to you who are full now,
for you will be hungry.
“Woe to you who are laughing now,
for you will mourn and weep.

26 “Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.

Benediction

Leader:  In our concerns and in our choices,

All:   God is with us.

Leader:  In our disappointments and in our joys,

All:  God is with us.

Leader:  In our protesting and in our serving,

All:   God is with us.

Leader: Now and always,

All:   God is with us.

Treasurer’s Report: We are off to a good start with $11,277 being received in offerings in January 2025. In order to meet our 2025 budget our monthly target for Sunday offerings is $9,206.

In January there was $400 donated to our Food Bank fund. Forwarding your $200 Ontario Tax Rebate cheque to our Food Bank fund or another worthy cause is encouraged.

The planned gift of $121,313.89 from the Estate of Salome H. has been placed in our General Designated Fund. Church Council will be assembling a team to help determine the best way to pay tribute to Salome and her family. The team will also consider some possible uses for these bequest funds and report back to the congregation. This plan was discussed and approved at the AGM on February 2, 2025.

Donations to Danforth Mennonite Church are always welcome through Sunday morning offerings, mailed cheques or email transfers at dmmc2174@gmail.com. Please contact Roger H. if you would like to join the monthly giving program which happens through bank transfers on the 15th of each month. Thank you to all for your generous support for the work of our church.

<The last word…

Prayers for the beauty of snow

Thank you for mornings when we wake up to the beauty of freshly fallen snow.
God of creation, thank you for the beauty of winter – for snow, icy windowpanes, evergreen trees, warm coats, sledding, and hot cocoa.

Prayers for safety in storms

Preserve those who travel (through snow and on ice); surround them with your loving care; protect them from every danger; and bring them in safety to their journey’s end.
Keep my feet from slipping, my wrist from breaking and my patience from coming to an end.
