Call to Worship
(from Psalm 141:1–2)

One: We call upon you, O God.

Many: Come quickly.

One: Let our prayers rise up as incense before you.

Many: Let our lifted hands be a sacrifice to you.

One: Holy One in heaven,

Many: We praise your name.

One: We pray for your reign to come.

All: We offer our worship.

Scripture Reading
Matthew 6:5-13 (NRSVA)

And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

‘When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Pray then in this way:

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
10     Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11     Give us this day our daily bread.
12     And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13     And do not bring us to the time of trial,
but rescue us from the evil one.

Prayers of the People

One: Loving Parent, who exists beyond the realms we can imagine and within the deepest parts of ourselves, we thank you for the joy of gathering in community, and we celebrate together all that is good, and beautiful, and holy in our lives.
In your mercy, God,

Many: hear our prayer.

One: Tender Parent, we thank you for the teachings of Jesus and for the privilege of coming to you in prayer.
We lift up the people in this community and those we love. For those concerns that have been spoken and those we carry in our hearts,
in your mercy, God,

Many: hear our prayer.

One: Nurturing Parent, we pray that all people will have their daily bread— the food, housing, health care, support, and safety they need
to survive and thrive. In your mercy, God,

Many: hear our prayer.

One: Guiding Parent, let our earthly leaders follow your will so that the people and the systems of this world might look more and more like your reign of peace and justice.
In your mercy, God,

Many: hear our prayer.

One: Protecting Parent, deliver your children from evil. For all who suffer pain in mind, body, or spirit, for all who live in fear, for all who grieve, for all who face violence:
in your mercy, God,

Many: hear our prayer.

One: Holy Parent, let these prayers rise up as incense before you as we pray with this community of saints and in the quiet of our own hearts.

(Silence.)

Amen.
